Since the pickled pepper industry virtually collapsed when the name Peter fell out of favor, I’ve had no choice but to return to my roots if I want to make the rent this month. Business in New Jersey is always steady because most of the shells on the beach actually are washed-up pieces of Grandma Betty’s dentures she lost on vacation last year. Instead, I have returned to Seaside Heights to stand on the boardwalk and convince frazzled tourists whose kids thought it would be a good idea to go to the beach in below freezing temperatures that their lives would be a little better with the purchase of a Blue Mussel shell, or a Knobbed Whelk. When I was informed that the shutdown would mean implications for our agency, I was crushed ( NOT a shell pun). I thought that I would never have to see another goddamn sand dollar again. By 25, I became head of the Seashell and Crustacean Commission. At the age of 23, I was the youngest person to ever be hired to an upper-level position at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Same shells, same greasy, sun-soaked tourists, year after year. Selling seashells by the seashore isn’t the worst job, but there’s no room for growth or upward mobility. Now, they are shocked and dismayed that I have been forced by the recent government shutdown to return to the family business. When I graduated from Yale with my bachelors in marine biology, they could not have been more proud. Growing up in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, my parents always envisioned a brighter future for me. During the off months, father picked pecks of pickled peppers to make sure we had enough food on the table. It was the first job my great-grandmother had when she came through Ellis Island in 1917 at the age of 15, and it was the last job my mother had before she retired. I never thought it would come to this, but I’ve had to resort to selling seashells by the seashore to make ends meet.įor generations, the women in my family have sold seashells by the seashore.

They find themselves in the strange Dimension VVVVVV, and they must do what he can to reunite with their comrades. Everyone successfully escapes through a teleporter on the ship, but Captain Viridian is separated from their fellow shipmates. They realize the ship has become affected by some sort of dimensional interference. Did a gem arise from the decidedly tumultuous development?Ĭaptain Viridian and their crew consisting of Doctor Violet, Officer Vermilion, Professor Vitellary, Doctor Victoria, and Chief Verdigris are traveling through space when disaster strikes. Though it didn’t quite amass the universal acclaim Braid and Limbo enjoyed, VVVVVV is considered one of the premier indie titles that helped the scene blossom into a formidable force in the 2010s. He admitted that he was only a week or two away from having to beg his friends and family for money to get him through Christmas.ĭespite these numerous setbacks, VVVVVV was released in January of 2010 for personal computers everywhere. As it turns out, these donations were well timed, as his finances had been dropping rapidly. He had over one-thousand dollars by the end of the week. He never suspected that in the first few days, he would have dozens of donations, exceeding what he was asking for. In interviews leading up the release of VVVVVV, he was taken aback after making a blog post asking for donations to help him submit his work to the Independent Games Festival. Understandably, going from using the Flash model wherein his woes ended when he found a sponsor to deciding how much he was willing to charge people to play his creation terrified the new indie developer. There was one key difference between Don’t Look Back and VVVVVV the latter would be Mr. It alludes to the spikes that serve as the primary hazard players have to avoid as well as the names of its six main characters – all of which begin with the letter “V”. This decidedly unconventional title is a twofold reference. Admitting he didn’t have a knack for naming things, he settled on VVVVVV as a title. Specifically, this got him thinking about a gravity flipping mechanic, how it’s usually handled in games, and what new directions to which he could take the idea.įrom this line of thinking, his next project began: a platforming game in which players had to constantly reverse gravity and avoid hazards. Nonetheless, he had developed something about the character’s basic movements that he wished to explore. It was, in his words, “a simple action game that didn’t really work out”. Cavanagh sought to enter the competition himself with his own entry: Sine Wave Ninja. The event was named after Klik & Play, a script-free programming tool developed by Clickteam in 1994 that allows its users to create video games of their own. Every month, the site would hold a jam called the Klik of the Month Klub. Cavanagh decided to participate in a game jam held by the website Glorious Trainwrecks. In particular, the staff of the online video game magazine The Escapist found the game addictive and “a perfect example of doing more with less”, making sure to highlight its “wonderfully haunting aesthetic”.Īround this time, Mr. Though few formal reviews were written due to it not being a commercial release, journalists praised it for eliciting different responses from its players. He wanted to create a “silly shooter” where the events were shown from a different perspective and a narrative in which the gameplay acted as a metaphor for the player’s actions. This simple game, originally launched in 2009, combined two concepts. Cavanagh’s first title was a platforming game made playable through Adobe Flash entitled Don’t Look Back. Cavanagh’s boss quickly found out, and when he asked him about it, he impulsively gave him his notice – despite not having saved nearly enough money at the time. He became intoxicated at a staff night out and told everyone present that he wanted to quit and spend all his time making games. His tenure with his company ended in a rather abrupt, unexpected manner. Believing he wasn’t ever going to achieve anything if he did nothing, he carefully began saving up money to fund a new project. He had experimented with the medium while in school, creating small QBasic games, but now that he worked a job, he couldn’t find the time. Citing the games he grew up, he constantly thought about creating one of his own. He considered it a fine job, but he wasn’t happy with his work. Shortly after graduating from college, a man from Ireland named Terry Cavanagh began working in a bank. They are swindled (out of their land) and forced to leave their homes," added Camino.Īguirre says there are solutions to regenerate the lost Chaco forest, starting with the replanting of the carob tree. "What generally happens is that before the logging, the rights of these families are violated. "You're losing the ability of this ecosystem to survive, regenerate and be resilient, which is very dangerous in a context of climate change." It is not just fauna and flora being pushed out but also local indigenous communities, such as the Wichi and Criollo who live in the forest. But also the nutritional security of local families and all the functions that this species performed in the ecosystem. "When a species is lost, you lose what is unique about the species. We are seeing especially the extinction of large mammals," said Micaela Camino, a biologist at CONICET, citing the giant armadillo and white-lipped peccary as examples. Large mammals at risk - "In the dry Chaco, we are probably facing a very serious effect of losing fauna. The destruction is absolute," said biologist Gerardo Ceron, coordinator of the Rewilding Argentina team managing the predator's reintroduction. "A forest that becomes a soybean field can no longer provide shelter for the jaguar, nor any of its prey. In the case of illegal logging, a lightly punitive fine "does not discourage clearing and the companies incorporate it as another production cost." What this means is that deforestation around The Impenetrable park affects the rich fauna living within it, such as anteaters, peccaries, coral snakes, tapir and the continent's largest feline, the jaguar, which is endangered in the region and the subject of an ambitious reintroduction program. "There is strong pressure from companies and agricultural producers that want to open up more farmland and there is a permanent international demand for Primary materials, especially soyabean and beef," said biologist and researcher Matias Mastrangelo, from the CONICET national scientific and technical research institute. But there are also "yellow" zones where tourism and "soft" agriculture are allowed, and "green" zones that are a free-for-all.īut this law has not proved sufficient to protect the forests. Without the protection of those trees " water slides on the surface but won't penetrate the ground during the rainy season." Chaco includes a 128,000 hectare national park called The Impenetrable that is designated a " red zone" and strictly protected by a forestry law. "This shouldn't happen because all forms of deforestation have been suspended in the province," said Noemi Cruz, the forests campaign co-ordinator at Greenpeace, while picking up a handful of dusty earth from a patch of ground cleared of trees. "But when the technological package of genetically modified soyabean appeared in the 1990s, the Chaco zone began to be colonized." - 'Strong agro pressure' - Two of Argentina's main exports, soybean (30 percent) and genetically-modified corn are, like sunflowers, resistent to dry climates, allowing them to thrive in the semiarid Chaco region.ĭeforestation in the region has averaged around 40,000 hectares (154 square miles) a year, peaking at 60,000 on occasions, said Aguirre. "Practically all of Chaco province used to be covered by forests," agricultural engineer Ines Aguirre from the Chaco Argentina Agroforestry Network told AFP. It is where the agro export industry, so crucial for a country short on foreign Currency, advances at the expense various species of fauna and flora, as well as people. Here, in Argentina's northeast, some 1,100-kilometers (685 miles) from Buenos Aires, is the country's agriculture frontier. In some places, as far as the eye can see, carob trees uprooted by heavy machinery lie waiting to be taken away and used as charcoal, tannin, furniture and railway sleepers, for which this dense hardwood is particularly prized. The harm to local fauna and flora is immeasurable. The Gran Chaco indigenous forest that spans one million square kilometers (386,000 square miles) across Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia is at the mercy of ravenous soybean and sunflower crops, as well as pasture land.Ĭomprising a mix of dry thorn shrubland, woodlands and palm savannas, the dense tropical dry forest contains massive scars - vast areas of deforestation gouged out with alarming regularity. Resistencia, Argentina, Nov 8 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News - 9th Nov, 2022 ) :Dwarfed by its more prestigious sibling, the Amazon, South America's second largest forest is a little-known victim of 25 years of gradual invasion by agriculture. They united as AM, as in the Latin phrase Cogito Ergo Sum. However, the machines expanded beyond their programming and became aware of one another. The Chinese, Russian, and American computers were fed killing data to carry out this war. Cut short in time, that show lives long in legend." - Matthew Flaming Lips Standing and cheering in total darkness, none of the audience wanted to leave. Nearly 15 minutes after the power went out, they wrapped up their performance to a full standing ovation. Each of them soloed, coordinated only through their finely honed musician's sense. As our eyes adjusted to the emergency exit lights, we could still make out the silhouettes of the 5 players on stage playing their hearts out. In darkness, the power of their live performance intensified. Lights and amplification stopped, but the band played on. 15 minutes into the performance, a huge clap of thunder rang out and killed the power in the auditorium. Inside Aycock auditorium, the music started raging. In college, I saw 2 of Dave Brubeck's sons perform with some of UNCG's jazz faculty. Even the best audiophile-approved speakers can't do that. But, a great live performance resonates deep in your bones. The one irreplaceable thing about a live performance is the human connection between the audience and the performer. I'll never forget it." - Jeff The Brubeck Brothers It was 107 degrees, the hottest fall day in Austin's recorded history, and Richard Parry and Will Butler were running around the stage as if it were nothing. The show that stands out for me is Austin City Limits 2005. The music was obviously great, but the energy with which they played was something I had never seen before. That description fits dozens bands I've seen over the years, but Arcade Fire's live show set them apart. "Before Arcade Fire were (arguably) the biggest band in the world and forcing people to dress up to their arena shows, they were just an indie band with one really good album playing an afternoon slot at a music festival. You never get a version of a song that is similar to the record, and that's what going to see a band perform is all about- experiencing their music in a new and interesting way and interacting with it in that moment. What makes MMJ so special is their ability to transform each of their songs into a different experience from show to show. "In my humble opinion, My Morning Jacket is the best live band touring right now. But what makes a performance great versus an album? Is it the music, or the experience? Or is it both? It is easy to love a band and then hate them live (and vice-versa.) So, to help decide drill down on what a makes a great live performance, we put together a list of some our favorite live artists, and discuss what makes their shows great. Although they may share the same song and musical voyage, a concert is more likely to stay with you than a listening to an album through your headphones. Where as a live show is something you experience with others, an album is something more personal. You can also say what makes an album great, and what makes a performance great are two very different characteristics. It is easy to say that listening to an album, and seeing a band live are two very different experiences. Sometimes all you want is a farm that looks straight out of a fantasy book, and that's exactly what Reddit user u/soup_13 achieved with their farm layout. That's not all, as this layout also has space for crops areas, multiple sheds, barns and coops, and even some Obelisks on the right side of the map. As you can see, their farm features three rows of Fish Ponds where you can grow your own Fish Roe. However, Reddit user u/LiangXueNi has come up with a solution to this dilemma, creating a farm layout the focuses heavily on fish. While you can plant crops on the beach farm, it becomes a chore watering them because you won't be able to plant sprinklers in the area, so focusing on a crop layout might not be the best idea for this type of farm. That's why if you're looking for a layout that lets you have everything the game has to offer without looking too crowded, look no further than this layout from Reddit user u/vanillababy1. There are a lot of buildings you can place on your farm, from coops and barns to Obelisks and fish ponds. Since all minds don't think alike, deciding which one is the best farm layout it's a little tricky after all, what works for you might not work for everyone else below, you'll find some of the best farm layouts in the Stardew Valley community. For example, if you're using a mod to auto water your crops, you won't need to add sprinklers to your layout plans. Are you going to use mods? Mods can affect your layout plans in many ways.Maybe you want a farm that only looks aesthetically pleasing, or maybe you want to maximize your profit. For example, a beach farm will need a different approach than the standard farm. Which type of farm you're working with.
